CONTEMPORARY

Originally emerging as a rebellion against the technical rigidity of ballet, contemporary evolved as an expressive dance style utilising momentum and release within its movement. Contemporary students will learn about the movement of their bodies and how this can be harnessed in order to create new ways of moving.

With a focus on individuality and creativity, contemporary will appeal to those who are artistically inclined and enjoy creating, expressing and exploring with their bodies.

Contemporary Syllabus Classes

Ages 9-15

Students will learn structured contemporary exercises, combinations and dances through syllabus work which will develop their understanding of the principles of momentum, contraction, release, use of breath and floor work.

They will show off their skills to an invited professional for personal feedback during an assessment in term three.

Students will then prepare and work towards a dance for the end of year concert.

  • Contemporary Repertoire

    Ages 14+

Contemporary repertoire students will apply their advanced technique within a range of combinations targeting different styles of contemporary.

This is a non syllabus class.

Dancers will learn a show item in term four and perform on stage in our end of year concert.

  • Adult Ballet/Contemporary

    Ages 18+

Incorporating both ballet and contemporary based techniques, this combo class will teach dancers technique while allowing exploration of the body and movement. The perfect balance of structure to freedom for those who want to get their bodies moving after a sedentary day at work.

This class is perfect for the adult with dance experience or for those who want to explore new ways of connecting with the floor and the space around them.
